LESSON ONE
My first lesson was learning the art of contemplation. I was happy to let my mind wander and to contemplate, but I was worried about how I was going to capture this richness, when I was in pain and lacking in energy. Contemplation is a process, best not rushed. It requires time and space; and dare I say it peace and quiet! It requires no judgement, let thoughts come and go, and wait to see what settles. Two things that have landed for me.
🍁 GENTLE - My word for the year (I’ve never had a word for the year before). This is about being gentle to myself, and with clients, colleagues and anyone I come into contact with. So many of my clients come to me when they can’t see a clear way forward, they’re not sure of the next steps, perhaps they’ve lost confidence in their skills and abilities. A gentle coaching approach can yield wonderful results for them. I’m intrigued to see how it plays out this year.
I was also reminded of the importance of contemplation in a career search, an opportunity to let your mind wander, to wait and see what lands, and not to be in a rush, but to consider fledgling ideas or different options and ponder them BEFORE taking any action. As the contemplation progresses you will find you gather ideas from different sources, friends, family, colleagues, books, podcasts, webinars, networking events (online for me at the moment), the world around you and this has been true for me.
🍁 A Bible verse - “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19). This verse fills me with hope, anticipation and encouragement for the new chapter and all it will bring. I keep holding onto it, in the times when it feels as if nothing is happening and all I am doing is resting.
One new thing I have coming up is God’s GRACE for Your Career Unwrapped - Learning Guide. This was published at the end of December, but since then has sat on a shelf waiting (a bit like I feel). It is designed to accompany my book God's GRACE for Your Career by providing the space and time to write down your reflections and complete the activities all in one convenient place and working through it to build up a picture of everything God has given you for your career.
I am hoping to be able to start marketing this and using it as a wonderful resource after Easter. For a sneak preview click the button below.
LESSON TWO
My second lesson was literally to take one step at a time learning that small wins are invaluable. My secret weapon – making a daily Grid. The Grid™ is a powerful framework for managing your life, time and action developed by Dr Magdalena Bak-Maier, which helps you apply key principles based on how our brains like to work to connect to the big picture with daily actions across 4 main quadrants, personal life, self-care, work and career.
My normal practice is to draw up a weekly Grid, encompassing these 4 areas all on one page detailing my ‘to dos’, plans, goals. I was even planning to do a whole year using the Grid. It turned out that I couldn’t focus on a whole week, let alone look at the whole year ahead, and instead I found creating a quick daily Grid was all I could manage and in fact all I needed.
It’s clear and concise and I can choose what to prioritise. I enjoy the endorphins released when I highlight things I have done. And if I don’t achieve everything – there’s always tomorrow! This practice turned out to be hugely beneficial because it helped me notice what I was achieving as well as providing me with lived experience that I can share with coaching clients.
I have been training to gain the ICF Grid Coach Balance Certificate and I am really delighted to announce that I am incorporating this wonderful coaching tool into my coaching practice. To find out more click on the link below.
LESSON THREE
My third lesson was to learn to work from rest. I had to sacrifice many things I would have liked to have done, cancelled conferences, cancelled in person meetings, delayed business development, reduced networking, no evening appointments at all. But when I reflect back on what I have achieved, talks, blogs, mentoring and coaching, whilst working at reduced capacity, I am amazed by so many small wins.

I have rested a lot! Lunchtime naps have become a staple. I have been encouraged by Faith in Business and their series on “Productivity: Working from Rest” and I was honoured to be asked to write a reflection for their God on Monday series. You can read it following the link below.
I still have more to learn about working from rest and my hope is that when I am back to full strength, I will continue to make time for rest and contemplation, now I have discovered their immense value.
As I recover, it’s still one step at a time, and I’m not sure how long the journey will be, but I want to say a thank you to everyone who has encouraged me, prayed for me, been patient with me and for all the work that has kept me going.
May you all flourish for the rest of this year as much as I hope to.
